Yellow-Red Montero & 2 own goals

Hamburger SV missed the leap into the direct promotion places from the 2nd Bundesliga and remain without a win in the third game in a row. A day after the doping ban on Mario Vuskovic was announced, the third-placed team had to settle for a 2-2 (1-2) win over fourth-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf but held on to a seven-point lead points on the Rhinelanders. Laszlo Benes (5th minute) and Christoph Klarer (75th/his side) scored for HSV, Dawid Kownacki (21st) and Felix Klaus (28th) for Düsseldorf.

Due to Darmstadt 98’s 1-0 victory in the side game at 1. FC Nürnberg, Hamburg are now five points behind first place. Like HSV, Zweite 1. FC Heidenheim have 50 points but could break away from the Walter side with an away win at Kaiserslautern on Saturday night.

In the Düsseldorf Arena, which sold out for the first time since 2019 with 52,200 spectators, including around 17,000 HSV fans, the Hamburgers started with an unusual string of threes on the defensive end after captain Sebastian Schonlau was suspended. Recently weak Javi Montero surprisingly returned to the squad, with defenders Moritz Heyer and Miro Muheim taking the other two positions. Moreover, HSV coach Tim Walter hoped that Sonny Kittel and Laszlo Benes, who were both new to the starting XI, would give them more attacking momentum.

Slovak international Benes should quickly realize the hope. With his converted penalty early in the margin, he gave the guests the lead after Dusseldorf’s Jordy de Wijs fouled Robert Glatzel. The defender had entered the starting XI for Fortuna defender André Hoffmann (gluteal muscle strain), who was absent at the last moment.
The hosts came back into play and Kownacki created two good chances, the striker taking advantage of the second to score his twelfth goal of the season. Despite Hamburg’s initially larger game share, Düsseldorf scored the opening goal before the break after solid preliminary work from Rouwen Hennings by Klaus.

In the game, which was pretty balanced overall, the guests pushed hard for the equalizer and made it 2-2 thanks to an own goal from Klarer. The HSV Montero defender saw the second yellow-red card of his short Hamburg career in the knockout stages.

FCN captain Christopher Schindler extended a Darmstadt Matthias Bader cross into his own goal with his left (Site notre bureau spécialisé) after an unsuccessful attempt to clear the ball. The 31st-minute goal was not apparent on Friday night in front of 26,545 fans at the Max Morlock Stadium. The hosts were good in the game, worked from corner to corner and made some fine final moves from Lino Tempelmann (15th), Kwadwo Duah (19th) and Fabian Nürnberger (29th).

After the break, the guests managed the narrow lead against engaged Nurnbergs, who were unconvincing in attack. Darmstadt goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen stopped a fine long shot from Johannes Geis (57th). Substitute Braydon Manu almost scored the second goal for the Hessians with a header (71st).
