Farewells to VfL Bochum last year had a bitter aftertaste for new Schalke coach Thomas Reis. « Unfortunately, the separation was very ugly, » the Bundesliga bottom coach said in a chat with ‘Kicker’. He said he was « disappointed » with the public treatment of the separation, but did not refer to the association, but to the people concerned.

« I certainly wasn’t responsible for how certain things turned out, that’s very clear. In retrospect, however, I wish either had been settled somewhere else, » Reis said. This does not happen. « It disappointed me, so it took me a little while to finish everything, » said the 49-year-old. « Although I make it clear that this is about individual people, not VfL as a club. »
Reis’ job at Bochum ended after three successful years in September 2022 and he is said to have already had contact with FC Schalke 04. A month after his split from VfL, he started his job as head coach at Gelsenkirchen . The big goal is to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga. « I want to stand straight, » Reis said and added, « We won’t be able to playfully solve everything, we have to step on our opponents’ toes figuratively. If we can do that over 19 games, we have good chance of staying in the class. »

Schalke Reis coach on winter transfers: ‘My ideas are saved’
Reis also commented on possible additional winter reinforcements. So far, the « squires » had signed Niklas Tauer, Jere Uronen (each on loan) and Timothée Kolodziejczak, who is due to leave in October (overview). « Bigger names will not be expected this time. Basically, well-known players do not guarantee success, even with them the question arises as to how quickly they can be integrated. And this rapid integration will be one of our main tasks for newcomers this winter,” said the coach.
« In terms of sport, I have put my ideas down, our management is trying under great pressure to put things in place as best as possible, which is anything but easy in winter and with our financial means. I am fully aware of the conditions – difficult frameworks and you will not hear a single word of complaint from me. (…) It goes without saying that as a coach, I would like to see one or two additional reinforcements in our situation », has explained Reis and described as « desirable » additional reinforcements for the flanks.
